Encaustic Painting Class with Gay Schempp

Encaustic painting is considered one of the most ancient media in the world. Encaustic paint is made of beeswax, damar resin and pigment, and is applied in a molten state. Afterward each layer is reheated to fuse it to the layer beneath. Beeswax is both a sealant and a preservative, so various materials such as paper can be collaged into the work. Layers of color, images, quotes or any porous material can be incorporated into a piece.

This hands-on workshop will introduce you to working with encaustic on board. We will be painting, collaging, and using transfer methods with the wax. All supplies are included, and you can bring your own images or papers if you want to further personalize your pieces.

Make your own Hat! with Agneta Persson

During this one-day course in millinery, you will learn the foundations of traditional hat making and create your own, beautiful, personally designed hat, from start to finish. You will learn how to block straws, mix materials, use millinery stitches, ways to pinch, pleat and otherwise manipulate the straw into exiting shapes that will fit your personal style and liking.

We will use the finest parisisal straw capelines, panama and paper straws. You will finish your hat by using feathers, flowers, beads, pearls and ribbons for decoration. Agneta Persson Hauser has had her millinery company in New York City, since 1998.

Her hats and accessories have been featured at Bergdorf Goodman and other upscale boutiques in USA and Europe. The use of unusual shapes and sense of whimsy distinguish her designs.

Students should bring a notebook, pencil, hand towel, hair dryer and any objects of desire to embellish their design, for this class. Fee: $120 + material costs ($5-$15)

A little background about the exhibit

Thanks to a floating artists' colony sponsored by the Washington Art Association on a farm in Little Compton, nine seasoned artists have rendered compelling visions of shore, marsh, fields, and woods around the Rhode Island village.

Each year the artist's group, based in Washington Depot in Litchfield County, offers a one-week sojourn at summer's end to a handful of its members, for the purpose of renewing their vision with fresh landscape and of experimenting with technique. The custom recalls the tradition of New England shoreline artists' colonies that dates back to the 19th century.

The By the Beautiful Sea exhibit presents the work of nine artists who have each interpreted the landscape according to their personal response to place, weather conditions, light, and the medium. Most of them painted their works in oil on canvas, although an acrylic work or two is in the mix, and Elizabeth MacDonald painted one striking image on fired clay, her customary surface for many years.

Painter, instructor, and gallery owner Ira Barkoff, who has led the band of artists for the past three years, says "When we go to Little Compton it's a big change from the landscape of Litchfield County, and people are really inspired by that." The result, he says, is some exciting paintings. Why Little Compton, of all the shoreline options in New England? It was, Barkoff says, a fortuitous choice: "At the time we started the program, we had an education chairman who had grown up in Little Compton on a farm that had been there since the 1600s. That first year was so rewarding that we've been using the farm as our September base ever since."

If you enjoyed the September performance by Dana Pomfret and friends, you'll want to return for what Dana's calling a Spring Music Fest: a two set session of original tunes and what Dana calls her group's "unrecognizable covers." Dana Pomfret made her mark on the music scene in New York with club dates and a series of recordings. Now based in Connecticut, she continues to perform and record to critical acclaim. In a review of Dana's third album, Jeff Gemmill
wrote of her vocal mastery: "she could sing the telephone directory and I'd be thrilled."

This evening catch some new tunes from the CD, Float, that's now in the works and due for release this summer.

Family-friendly felting workshops, during the weekend of March 27 and 28

Fiber artist Elena Gibson shows how to make a simple yet attractive felting projects that you can complete in one brief session. In the kid-friendly workshops, suitable for both beginners and people who have some felting experience, participants learn how to work with the supplied materials to produce a small completed work: felted eggs on Saturday morning or afternoon and flowered pins on Sunday afternoon. The artist supplies all materials necessary to complete the project. Both workshops work well for children of 8 years and older, but you don't need to bring a child with you to join the fun.

This class introduces students to altering photographs through experimentation. Instruction focuses on exploring techniques using household products, crayons, inks, and tools. Workshop time is spent discovering ways to 'destroy' photos and then bring them back to life through the student's imagination.

A festive reception on Friday, February 26, from 6 to 9 pm celebrates 29 young artists whose work appears in the juried exhibit titled Young Artists 2010, at Pia Sjölin Design, in the Shoppes at Farmington Valley, on route 44 in Canton, Connecticut. The exhibit continues through Sunday, March 28, seven days a week.

Work in the show include paintings; drawings, photography and other works on paper; blown glass; jewelry; and installations. The works range from polished works in glass and technically meticulous photographs and drawings to loosely worked acrylics and paintings that refer to graffiti and comic-book imagery. One installation artist makes playful use of text combined with everyday objects, such as ordinary office supplies. Look for images of some works to appear on Pia's blog in the coming weeks.

All artists showing work in the exhibit are 25 or younger. Most are in their 20s, many in their teens, and a couple still of grade-school age. Student artists attend classes at Simsbury and Canton high schools, the University of Hartford art school, and Tunxis Community College, among other schools. Other artists graduated from Franklin Pierce University, Boston University, and Sarah Lawrence College.

At the reception, participating artist Mike Detelj will read his spoken-word work, "Acts of Love." A combo of young jazz musicians will also perform: Brad Parlimen (drums), Jackson Fitzgerald (guitar), Zack Wiles (bass), and Tom Kelley (sax)

In conjunction with the exhibit, the gallery will host a talk and discussion on Art & Youth on the evening of Wednesday, March 10 at 6:30 pm, including some of the participating artists.

All works in the exhibit are offered for sale, which is not often true of exhibits of student work. Gallery founder Pia Sjölin, a working artist herself, believes that part of supporting young artists is encouraging them to take their first steps toward becoming self-sustaining artists. "I remember that when I was starting out it was so hard to get anything into a show where people could see it and react to it. I want to do for the young artists what I want to do for all artists: just give them a show, and that encourages them to produce more work," she said.

The Young Artists 2010 at Pia Sjölin Design exhibit coincides with other exhibits in the Hartford area that showcase the work of young artists who are still in school:

* Farmington Public Schools K-12 Student Select Art Exhibit, through February 26, in the community room at the Farmington Public Library, 6 Monteith Drive, Farmington.
* Next, the Emerging Talent Show, through March 14, features works by high-school seniors from 11 schools in the region. At Gallery on the Green, Route 44 at Dowd Avenue, Canton.
* There's also a student show coming up in Harwinton, we've heard, but we haven't yet received details about it; stay tuned.

Mad Agnes is not one person, but three, and they're mad in only the most inventive way. Margo Hennebach, Adrienne Jones and Mark Saunders stir up elements of classical and folk, cross singer/songwriter poignancy with street-theatre smarts and infuse it all with courageous harmonies, complex counterpoint and rich storytelling in a powerful live performance. Their lyrics are intelligent, their delivery warm, and insightful. Not surprisingly, each has arrived at the trio from a long list of solo accomplishments.

The music of classically trained Hennebach has been described as “contemporary and timeless” by the Star Gazette, and “captivating” by Sing Out Magazine. A finalist in songwriting competitions, including Kerrville and Napa Valley, Margo has a BM in Piano from Oberlin Conservatory and a masters degree in Music Therapy from the Guildhall School of Music in London, and is Feldenkrais Practitioner. Jones is a self-taught fingerstyle & rhythm guitarist and bassist, a finalist in four national songwriting competitions, a member of Actors Equity Association, and a Reiki Practitioner. Of her CD release, Talking River, Dirty Linen magazine praised her “expressive ability to wrap meaning around a lyric with the simple rise or fall of a note.” Mad Agnes also features Hartford Conservatory graduate Saunders on vocals, acoustic, electric, National steel and bass guitars. His guitar work recalls the inventiveness of Richard Thompson, while providing "understated ballast with his voice and lead guitar--his delicate arpeggio picking...and fiery fills and runs,” says Acoustic Guitar magazine.

Pia's work goes on exhibit in Chicago this month . . . . . . . . .

Hop a plane or alert your friends and colleagues who live on the edge of Lake Michigan: On January 15, the Swedish American Museum in Chicago opens a temporary exhibit that features the glass and textile work of Pia Sjölin, founder of Pia Sjölin Design. The exhibit, called Swedish Cows: Slow Art, An Audiovisual Journey in Stillness, ruminates on the particular breed of photogenic cow native to Sweden. The exhibit uses glass, textile, photography, video, light, and sound to explore the history and culture of these cows, and it features artwork by Pia Sjölin and Patrik Gunnar Helin, internationally known photographer and filmmaker.

Items from Pia's cow collection, designed for this exhibit, make playful or subtle reference to the bovine creatures on blown and sandblasted glass and on a fabric hanging.

Recent visitors to Pia Sjölin Design may recall Patrik's large color photographs of cows in the mist that currently hang in the gallery. (Learn more about Patrik's Swedish cow documentary work on his Slow Art web site. Turn up the volume on your computer's speakers for the full effect.)

The exhibit in Chicago runs through March 14.

Special events at Pia Sjölin Design this month:

Fiber artist Jan Marek Raczkowski remains in residence. Frequently during the woolens season, you can find Jan knitting calmly at the counter and discussing informally his hand-spun and -dyed yarns and the hand-knitted garments made from them. The yarns and shawls, scarves, sweaters, and coats are the culmination of Jan's 25 years as a fiber artist. In either subtle or vibrant colorways, the yarns combine hues in unexpected ways.

Artist's reception in the Spotlight Gallery for Linn Bae, Friday, January 29, 5 pm to 7:30 pm

Meet painter Linn Bae and her oil paintings: vivid, deeply textured still lifes.

Educated in Seoul and Hartford, Hartford-based painter Linn Bae has been showing her memorable still lifes and self-portraits since the year 2000. This is her first exhibition in Canton.

The exhibit runs through Sunday, February 28.

XXL, a group show of larger-than-life works in many media by more than a dozen artists continues through the end of January. This show has been such a HUGE success that we've held it over, or at least the works that are not called for elsewhere. The works still in the exhibit include an oversized green apple from Gilmor Glass studio, compelling large-format abstract paintings by Zbigniew Grzyb, and Thomas Denton's king-size bed handcrafted in glowing wood and enlivened with a lyrical metal insert sculpted by John F. Mahoney.

Something fishy: Time to snag a fish

In preparation for an April 2010 exhibit and benefit auction of hand-decorated life-sized wooden fish, we have been distributing blank fish to professional and amateur artists and to sponsors who intend to commission artists and artisans to decorate the fish. Some of the fish have already assumed their new and unique identities, but we still have some fish available for people who would like to add one to the growing school. The returning fish will go on display starting in February, and the silent auction, to benefit the Farmington River Watershed Association, will begin April 1 and end April 16 at the group's fundraiser that takes place in the gallery. $10 deposit requested for each blank fish.

Now that the new space approaches its first anniversary, things have calmed down enough that Pia can once again offer color consulting service, as well as faux finishes and mural painting. Call for work by young artists: submission deadline in mid-February

At the end of February 2010 we will exhibit a juried show of the work of emerging artists 25 years old and younger. The jury will consider the work in two age brackets: age 15 and under and ages 16 to 25. Artists who would like to participate may submit up to 3 works (in any medium) to the gallery from February 15 through February 17 between 10 am and 6 pm. Judging will take place shortly after the submission deadline. Every work submitted must be ready to hang or install (for example, we cannot accept for consideration unmatted drawings in a portfolio or rolled up in a tube). More detailed guidelines and applications will be available at the counter and by email in mid-January. Stop in to sign up to receive the guidelines by email.

In XXL, a group show of hand-crafted furniture and monumental works fills the extra-large gallery space of Pia Sjölin Design in Suite 209 of the Shoppes at Farmington Valley on Route 44 in Canton. Works include a shimmering green blown-glass pear nearly two feet tall, created by Gilmore Glass, and a king-size bed by Thomas Denton. Among the paintings, a 17-foot vertical banner by emerging artist Mike Detelj incorporates influences from action painting to graffiti art.

An opening reception kicks off the exhibit, Saturday, November 21, 6–9 pm at the gallery.

Concurrently, in the Spotlight gallery niche, Fusion/Photo/Art showcases more conventionally sized photographic fusion images by Joe Galiette.

FRWA draws on the New England folk-art tradition to inspire Watershed stewardship

The Farmington River Watershed Association is excited to introduce a new Fundraiser/Outreach program inspired by the natural diversity of the Watershed, the beauty of fish, and the creativity of local artists.

The Fundraiser engages local artists to imaginatively decorate life-size carved wooden fish. The folk-art fish will be artfully displayed in the beautiful new Pia Sjölin Design Gallery in Canton. At a gala opening to coincide with opening day of the 2010 fishing season, the fish will be auctioned to benefit the Farmington River Watershed Association’s watershed education and water quality monitoring and restoration efforts.

Fish will also swim into area schools and scout groups as we initiate an artistic educational outreach. We will present a short program on the importance of protecting the River and preserving the Watershed and then give the kids an opportunity to decorate their own small fry.

We are looking for help in several ways. We are putting a call out for artists to decorate the fish. Sponsors are needed to help defray the cost of the Fundraiser: a large fish can be sponsored for $25.00 and a school of small fish (for school and scout groups) can be sponsored for $50.00. We will auction off the large fish decorated by the artists and the schools of smaller fish will be exhibited and released to the children. Sponsorship is tax deductible. We need a core group of people willing to help with graphic design, public relations, and help creating the exhibit. If you know of art teachers/ artists/ scout leaders/graphic designers who may be interested please let us know or have them contact Carolyn Smith at csind@optonline.net. If you are interested in decorating a fish they can be picked up at The Pia Sjölin Design Gallery, The Shoppes at Farmington Valley, 110 Albany Turnpike (Rt.44) Suite 209, Canton or at FWRA headquarters, 749 Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury. Southern Italian singer-songwriter, composer and actor Peppe Voltarelli will make his New York City concert debut on Wednesday November 11, 2009 at (Le) Poisson Rouge. Born in Italy¹s Calabria region, the 40 year-old Voltarelli¹s work is a modern Italian¹s musical take on the diaspora of tight-knit Calabrian immigrant communities that continue to thrive throughout Europe and the Americas. At (Le) Poisson Rouge Voltarelli will offer a set drawn from his first solo album, 2007¹s ³Distratto ma però²(Distracted But However), a project which the Rome-based musician has supported with over 200 live shows in Italy and Europe, the results of which were released on his 2008 live album ³Duisburg, Nantes, Praga². This New York appearance is part of Pan-American tour which will see Voltarelli perform for the first time in Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Mexico City, Los Angeles, Toronto and Montreal.

New York filmgoers have already had the opportunity to see Peppe Voltarelli in a leading role in the 2006 mockumentary feature ³La Vera Leggenda di Tony Vilar² (The Real Legend of Tony Villar), which showed in official selection at the 2007 TriBeCa Film Festival. The semi-biographical plot follows the path of a contemporary Italian singer (Voltarelli), on the trail of a crooner from his Calabrian village (Vilar), who found fame and fortune in 1960¹s Argentina and eventually disappeared into anonymity in the Bronx¹s Italian community along Arthur Avenue. Directed by fellow Calabrian Giuseppe Gagliardi, ³La Vera Leggenda di Tony Vilar² will be screened on Tuesday November 10, 2009 at NYU¹s Casa Italiana as a preview to Wednesday¹s (Le) Poisson Rouge event. Voltarelli and Gagliardi previously collaborated on ³Doichlanda², a 2003 documentary about Italian immigration to Germany -- their ongoing music and film relationship producing numerous award winning video clips.

Peppe Voltarelli is a founding member of "Il Parto delle Nuvole Pesanti"(The Birth of the Heavy Clouds) one of Italy¹s seminal bands of the 1990¹s, whose style is a mix of rock and Calabrian folk traditions. Voltarelli¹s path as a touring musician has lead him to collaborations with other cutting edge Italian artists exploring similar mixes of old world and new world sounds, such as the German-born Italian raised Vinicio Capossela, Sicilian Roy Paci (Manu Chao) and Neopolitan Daniele Sepe. The Calabrian musician has twice been recognized in Italy¹s prestigious Tenco Prize event.

Voltarelli has also contributed music and text to Italy¹s theatrical stage with a 2001 work on the life of Domenico Modugno, the multiple Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter who penned one of the most well known Italian popular songs in the world, 1958¹s San Remo Festival winning "Nel blu dipinto di blu², more commonly known as "Volare". Along with the Florence-based Krypton troupe, Voltarelli composed the original music for "Roccu u Stortu" (Rocco the Crooked), the anti-war saga of a Calabrian soldier¹s desertion in WWI. An active pacifist, Voltarelli traveled to Iraq in 2003 to participate in a peace concert held in Bagdad¹s Palestine Hotel, an account of which can be seen in the documentary "Sotto il cielo di Baghdad" (Under the Baghdad Sky). Voltarelli is also a published author with a collection poetry and songs in Calabrian dialect with English translation.

The opening act for Peppe Voltarelli¹s (Le) Poisson Rouge date is the Montreal-based Italo-Canadian singer-songwriter Marco Calliari. The Calabrian-born, one time Latin American star, now based in New York, Tony Vilar will make a special guest appearance in Peppe Voltarelli¹s set.

A Little Background on "Dirty Laundry"
Danny Kortchmar was an integral part of the 70s and 80s music scene. He recorded, toured, wrote with and produced such artists as James Taylor, Carole King, Don Henley, Billy Joel, Jackson Browne. Danny wrote "Dirty Laundry," "Honey Don't Leave LA," "All She Wants To Do Is Dance" and more.
Tim McDonald relocated to CT from California about 9 years ago, and instantly became well-known for his incredible vocals and guitar playing. Featuring a wonderful rhythm section, Jon Peckman on drums and Ed Corvo on bass, this is going to be a great show!

Woodcarving Workshop with David Holzman
Time: 1-4 PM
Fee: $60

David Holzman offers woodcarving workshops that allow first-time carvers and artists a chance to try this ancient art. Using the format of relief carving he teaches the basics of creating decorative plaques, signs and original imagery. By simplifying the process and providing all the tools and materials David will introduce you to woodcarving in a safe and relaxed atmosphere. Students are guided from initial drawings to transferring the designs to the carving techniques used to bring the design to life. Every participant goes home with a unique art object and a new appreciation of this artform.

David Holzman has been teaching art since 1980. Currently on the faculty of Simsbury Public Schools and Central Connecticut State University, he has been a practicing artist since the early seventies, specializing in wood carving, sculpture, painting and printmaking. David has conducted woodcarving workshops in a number of different settings such as privately in his own studio, in summer camp programs and in congregations in the area.

During this one-day course in millinery, you will learn the foundations of traditional hat making and create your own, beautiful, personally designed hat, from start to finish. You will learn how to block straws, mix materials, use millinery stitches, ways to pinch, pleat and otherwise manipulate the straw into exiting shapes that will fit your personal style and liking.

We will use the finest parisisal straw capelines, panama and paper straws.

You will finish your hat by using feathers, flowers, beads, pearls and ribbons for decoration.

Agneta Persson Hauser has had her millinery company in New York City, since 1998.

Her hats and accessories have been featured at Bergdorf Goodman and other upscale boutiques in USA and Europe. The use of unusual shapes and sense of whimsy distinguish her designs.

Students should bring a notebook, pencil, hand towel, hair dryer and any objects of desire to embellish their design, for this class.
